As we get to know families during outreach, recruitment, and enrollment, we have opportunities to learn about their cultures — and our own. Our cultures affect our beliefs, values, perspectives and decision-making. We need to know what is important to families and how that impacts what they want for their children and themselves. Understanding cultures is an important step toward building respectful relationships with families.

This webinar is a part of the Building Culturally Responsive Relationships with Families from Recruitment to Transition series. Understanding families’ cultures — and our own — is essential to building respectful partnerships with families. This is especially true during challenging times for families and communities. In this four-part webinar series, participants learn strategies for partnering with families during their time in the program — from recruitment through to the child’s transition out of the program. We draw on foundational concepts from the Head Start Parent, Family, and Community Engagement Framework and the Relationship-Based Competencies to Support Family Engagement.

In this session, participants will:

  • Learn key terms and concepts about culture and cultural responsiveness
  • Reflect on their own cultural identity and identify ways to set biases aside
  • Discuss culturally responsive strategies for engaging with families during outreach, recruitment, and enrollment
  • Learn about resources that can deepen knowledge about culture and cultural responsiveness
