WEBINAR: Nurturing Culturally Responsive Relationships

October 14, 2021 @ 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm
Autumn Strausbaugh

Building relationships that are culturally responsive is essential to engaging families. Understanding a family’s cultures takes curiosity, humility, a commitment and willingness to learn from our mistakes. Staff can use strengths-based strategies and reflective tools to communicate with families in ways that are culturally responsive and respectful.

This webinar is a part of the Building Culturally Responsive Relationships with Families from Recruitment to Transition series. Understanding families’ cultures — and our own — is essential to building respectful partnerships with families. This is especially true during challenging times for families and communities. In this four-part webinar series, participants learn strategies for partnering with families during their time in the program — from recruitment through to the child’s transition out of the program. We draw on foundational concepts from the Head Start Parent, Family, and Community Engagement Framework and the Relationship-Based Competencies to Support Family Engagement.

In this session, participants will:

  • Explore concepts and practice skills for building culturally responsive relationships
  • Examine strategies for having challenging conversations and repairing relationships with families
  • Explore the use of reflective practice and reflective supervision as tools to deepen culturally responsive practice
  • Discover resources for skills, knowledge and practices for nurturing culturally responsive relationships
