WEBINAR: Partnering with Families in Culturally Responsive Ways During Challenging Times

October 21, 2021 @ 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm
Autumn Strausbaugh

Culturally responsive relationships affirm all families’ strengths, cultures, and commitment to their child’s learning and well-being. These relationships are especially important for families who are experiencing challenges to their well-being. When we are culturally responsive, families see our programs and community partners as a source of support. Staff can partner with parents in culturally respectful ways to address concerns related to housing, health, mental health, finances, or family and child safety.

This webinar is a part of the Building Culturally Responsive Relationships with Families from Recruitment to Transition series. Understanding families’ cultures — and our own — is essential to building respectful partnerships with families. This is especially true during challenging times for families and communities. In this four-part webinar series , participants learn strategies for partnering with families during their time in the program — from recruitment through to the child’s transition out of the program. We draw on foundational concepts from the Head Start Parent, Family, and Community Engagement Framework and the Relationship-Based Competencies to Support Family Engagement.

In this session, participants will:

  • Learn strategies for engaging in conversations about sensitive topics related to housing, finances, health, mental health, or child and family safety
  • Explore tools such as reflective practice and reflective supervision to support relationship-building with families experiencing challenges
  • Review ways to advocate for and support families by strengthening community partnerships
  • Learn about resources to support engagement with families in difficult times
